The best IPTV apps for Apple TV compared on logins, free versus paid and setup with the Siri Remote, plus why TiviMate is not an option on tvOS at all.

In a hurry? VIPSATV hands over a 24-hour trial with no card.
Our editorial pick among the best IPTV apps for Apple TV is iMPlayer, for its guide-led layout, with IPTV Smarters Pro as the simpler option that is free to install. GSE Smart IPTV and iPlayTV are the other tvOS players worth knowing. TiviMate, the Android favourite, has no Apple TV version at all. This is a guide to the player software; the service feeding it matters at least as much, and we come to that below.
What runs on Apple TV, and what does not
Apple TV runs tvOS and installs apps only from its own App Store. There is no side route for Android apps, so the Android players people often recommend are simply not available:
- TiviMate: Android TV only, no tvOS version
- OTT Navigator: Android only
- Televizo: Android original; a listing using the name elsewhere may come from another developer
What remains is a shorter list of players built for tvOS. The good news is that the Apple TV App Store makes checking easy: if an app appears when you search on the Apple TV itself, it supports your model.
How we compared the best IPTV apps for Apple TV
For each app we read the tvOS App Store listing and the developer’s own notes, and compared login types, whether a programme guide is supported, how the free and paid versions differ, and how much setup the app asks of someone holding a Siri Remote. The order is our editorial pick from those facts.
We do not rank players on reliability scores, because we do not run long-term performance comparisons, and a single setup on a single line would not tell you much about yours. How a player behaves with your service, on your broadband, is what a trial is for.

The tvOS players side by side
Details are taken from each app’s App Store listing and can change with an update. Read the listing on your Apple TV before paying for an upgrade.
| App | On tvOS | Logins | Free to install | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iMPlayer | Yes | Xtream Codes, M3U | Yes, paid upgrades | Browsing by programme guide |
| IPTV Smarters Pro | Check the listing | Xtream Codes, M3U | Yes | Quick setup, familiar layout |
| GSE Smart IPTV | Yes | Xtream Codes, M3U | Check the listing | A long-standing, no-frills player |
| iPlayTV | Yes | M3U; check the listing for others | Paid, per the listing | A clean tvOS interface |
| TiviMate | No | Not applicable | Not applicable | Android TV only |
iMPlayer: our first pick for a guide-led layout
iMPlayer’s listing centres on the programme guide, with catch-up and on-demand sections close by and an interface you can customise. That suits a television, where most people want to see what is on now and next before choosing a channel. It is also available on iPhone and iPad, so the same app can follow you from the sofa to a tablet.
The free version lets you see whether the layout suits you; some features sit behind a paid upgrade. There are plenty of settings, so expect the first setup to take longer than Smarters. Once done, it rarely needs revisiting.
IPTV Smarters Pro: the quick, familiar option
IPTV Smarters Pro is the name most people already know from phones and Android boxes. On Apple TV it keeps the same structure: live channels, films and series, with a guide for the live side. Setup asks for an Xtream Codes login or an M3U URL.
Search for it in the App Store on your Apple TV and check the developer name before installing, since similar titles exist. If it does not appear on your device, iMPlayer or GSE Smart IPTV cover the same logins. Our IPTV Smarters Pro review goes into the app on other platforms.
GSE Smart IPTV: long-standing and plain
GSE Smart IPTV has been on Apple platforms for years. It reads M3U playlists and Xtream Codes logins, supports a programme guide and handles an unusually wide range of playlist formats. The menus are dense and the look is dated next to newer apps.
It is a sensible backup to keep installed, particularly if a service supplies a playlist format that other apps struggle with.
iPlayTV: a tidy tvOS interface
iPlayTV is a tvOS player with a clean, modern layout that fits the Apple TV’s look. Its listing covers M3U playlists and guide support; check the current listing for price and login options before buying, as they can change.
If the guide shows gaps, look for the option to add a separate EPG link. Many services provide one alongside the M3U URL.
Setting up an IPTV app with the Siri Remote
Entering a long server address with an on-screen keyboard is the slowest part of any Apple TV setup. A few habits make it easier:
- Have your Xtream Codes server address, username and password, or your M3U URL, open on your phone.
- Install the player from the App Store on the Apple TV.
- When a text field appears, use the keyboard prompt on a nearby iPhone signed in to the same Apple Account, if your setup shows one, to type or paste instead.
- Let the channel list and guide load fully before switching channels.
- Add the channels you watch most to favourites so they sit near the top.
Wired or wireless on Apple TV
Apple’s spec pages show which Apple TV models have an Ethernet port. If yours has one and the router is within reach, a cable removes Wi-Fi as a variable. The services we rate recommend 25 Mbps for 4K, which is a sustained figure, not a peak one.
If you are on Wi-Fi only, keep the Apple TV close to the router or on a strong mesh point. Our guide on how to fix IPTV buffering covers the home-network checks.
The line matters more than the app
A tvOS player renders the stream; it cannot repair one that arrives broken. If streams stutter in every app, the line or your network is the likelier cause.
All five services we rate list Apple TV among supported devices. Our service ranking comes from published figures: channels, library, price per month at each term and trial terms. VIPSATV ranks first with 57,000+ channels, a rolling month at £11.99 on its plan page and a 24-hour trial that takes an email, not a card. The full table is in our UK IPTV subscription rankings.
Judging a service on the Apple TV itself
Because the Apple TV is usually the main screen in the house, it is the right place to run a trial. A few points make that evening worth more:
- Load the trial line into the player you intend to keep, so you judge the pairing you will actually live with
- Watch at the hour the household normally watches, when demand on any line is at its highest
- Move through the guide and check that it matches what is on screen
- Open the channels you care about, not just the first page of the list
- If a channel stutters, try it in a second tvOS app before blaming either the app or the service
- If your plan will also cover phones or tablets, try them at the same time as the television
Firstchannels, one of the five services we rate, runs its setup through a third-party player app, so read its instructions before the trial starts. For the others, any player in the table above will take the login.
Which Apple TV app should you install?
| If you want | Install |
|---|---|
| A guide-led layout and do not mind setup time | iMPlayer |
| The quickest route to watching | IPTV Smarters Pro |
| A proven player that reads unusual playlists | GSE Smart IPTV |
| A tidy interface, happy to pay for the app | iPlayTV |
Our recommendation is iMPlayer for most living rooms, and IPTV Smarters Pro if you want something familiar with less setup. Whichever you choose, the trial is the cheapest way to see a service on your own line at peak time. If you also watch on a phone or tablet, our iPhone and iPad app guide covers the iOS side.
The app is only half of it
A player without a line shows an empty guide. VIPSATV issues a 24-hour trial with no card, long enough to watch it on your own line at peak time.
Start the 24-hour trialWorth knowing
Why the player and the line are two separate decisions
The app is the part you handle every day: the channel list, the guide, how the remote moves through menus. The line is the supply of video behind it, and it decides whether the picture arrives cleanly when demand is high. They are chosen separately and they fail separately.
A weak line makes even a well-made player look broken, while a strong line can flatter an average one. If several apps stutter at the same moment on the same evening, the common factor is the supply, and swapping players will not change it.
So fix one variable at a time. Find a line that behaves on a trial, then choose the tvOS player whose layout and guide suit you.
What makes a good tvOS player different from a phone app
On a television, the remote is the whole interface. A player that is pleasant on a touchscreen can be tiresome with a Siri Remote if it hides channels behind several layers of menus. Look for large focus states, a guide you can move through quickly and a favourites list close to the home screen.
Text entry is the other difference. Typing a long server address with an on-screen keyboard is slow, so a player that lets you add details from a phone, or an Apple TV set to accept keyboard input from a nearby iPhone, saves time during setup.
Finally, a large channel list is harder to browse on a television than on a phone. Trimming the line-up in your service's dashboard before loading it into the app makes any tvOS player easier to live with.
Common questions
What is the best IPTV app for Apple TV?
Our editorial pick is iMPlayer, whose listing puts the programme guide, catch-up and on-demand sections at the centre of a remote-friendly layout. IPTV Smarters Pro is the simpler alternative if you want to be watching within minutes of installing.
Is IPTV Smarters Pro or iMPlayer better on Apple TV?
They suit different viewers. iMPlayer is built around browsing by guide and offers more settings, with some features behind a paid upgrade. IPTV Smarters Pro has a shorter setup and a plainer layout. Both accept an Xtream Codes login or an M3U URL.
Why do my streams buffer on every IPTV app I try?
If streams stutter in every app on the same Apple TV, the common factor is the line or your home network, not the software. Try a wired connection if your model has an Ethernet port, then check the service on a trial at your usual viewing hour.
Can I install TiviMate on Apple TV?
No. TiviMate is an Android TV app and its developer publishes no tvOS version. Apple TV installs apps only from the App Store, so any listing using the name is from a different developer.
Do these apps work on Apple TV 4K?
The apps covered here have tvOS listings in the App Store. Open the App Store on the Apple TV itself and search by name: if the app appears there, it supports your model and tvOS version. Check the developer name before installing.
Should I pay for a long IPTV plan before trying an app?
No. Load a trial line into the app you prefer and watch for an evening at your usual hour before paying for a long plan. A trial on your own connection tells you more than any review can.
